Matteo Rottoli is a Full Professor of Surgery at the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna and the Director of the Program of Robotic Surgery of the Alimentary Tract at Sant’Orsola Hospital in Bologna. Matteo Rottoli trained in general and emergency surgery, with a specific focus on the surgery of the alimentary tract. In particular, he has developed significant expertise in colorectal surgery, specifically in the treatment of colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Sant’Orsola Hospital is a leading center in the surgical treatment of IBD and has treated the largest series of patients affected by ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease in Europe. Moreover, it is a referral center for locally advanced and recurrent pelvic cancers.
Matteo Rottoli graduated in 2004 and completed his surgical training in 2010 at the University of Milan. During that period, he spent over a year in the Colorectal Surgery Department at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio, USA, where he developed his interest in inflammatory bowel disease. After completing his surgical training, he moved to London, UK, to pursue advanced fellowships in colorectal surgery and laparoscopic surgery at St. Thomas’ Hospital, Medway Hospital, and University College Hospital.
In 2015, he returned to Italy to pursue an academic and surgical career at the University of Bologna, the oldest and one of the most prestigious universities in the world. Since then, he has been instrumental in developing the minimally invasive program, and subsequently the robotic program, in the Unit of Surgery of the Alimentary Tract. He has been responsible for the research program and became the secretary of the General Surgery Training Program in 2023. He is also responsible for several surgical courses in the Degree of Medicine and Surgery program, where he serves as vice-coordinator. Matteo Rottoli was promoted to Full Professor of Surgery and Director of the Robotic Program in 2024.
He has published more than 140 papers on colorectal surgery and is a member of several surgical societies.
Matteo Rottoli is married to a surgeon and has two children: a 10-year-old daughter and a 6-year-old son. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family and friends and traveling.
