Professor Irshad A. Shaikh is a highly experienced colorectal and general surgeon with a specialist focus on advanced colorectal cancer, pelvic exenteration, and minimally invasive surgery, including robotic and laparoscopic techniques. With over two decades of surgical experience, he is recognised for his expertise in complex colorectal procedures and for leading innovation in robotic surgery. He currently practices as a Consultant at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and serves as Professor of Surgery at the University of East Anglia.

Prof. Shaikh graduated in 1997 and completed his postgraduate surgical training in India before moving to the UK to pursue higher specialist training. He obtained multiple advanced qualifications, including FRCS, MD (with commendation), and CCT in General Surgery. He trained in leading centres such as St Mark’s Hospital in London, where he undertook prestigious colorectal and laparoscopic fellowships, gaining extensive experience in complex pelvic and rectal cancer surgery. Over the years, he has played a pivotal role in developing and delivering robotic colorectal programmes across the UK, establishing services in multiple centres and advancing surgical practice through innovation and collaboration.

An internationally recognised leader in robotic colorectal surgery, Prof. Shaikh is actively involved in teaching, training, and research. He is a European board examiner, faculty member, and trainer in robotic surgery, and has mentored surgeons across the UK and internationally. He has published nearly 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals, including several describing innovative techniques in robotic surgery. He continues to lead major research studies, including trials comparing robotic, laparoscopic, and open colorectal surgery, and has received numerous national and international awards for clinical excellence and innovation.

Outside of work, Prof. Shaikh is married to a physician and has two sons working in finance and banking. He enjoys cricket, badminton, travel, and spending time with his family.
